About Strong Man Lodge

Strong Man Lodge No. 45 is one of the oldest Masonic lodges in existence, with nearly three centuries of proud history. Formally constituted in the City of London in 1733, our earliest members were already meeting (somewhat unofficially) as far back as 1728.
Based in Central London at Freemasons’ Hall, the lodge embodies Masonic heritage, a commitment to brotherhood, and community support while fully embracing the vibrant dynamism of modern Freemasonry.
The lodge’s distinctive name is inspired by Thomas Topham, an 18th-century “strong man” renowned across Great Britain and Ireland for his incredible feats of strength under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. John Desaguliers, a Freemason and member of the Royal Society.
One of the first public exhibitions of his strength was of pulling against a horse whilst lying on his back and placing his feet against a wall, and this feat is what is depicted in the emblem of our lodge.
Topham was the landlord of a tavern in East London, which was renamed “The Strong Man” after his premature death in 1749. This tavern became our lodge’s home in 1764 and remained so until 1813, cementing the name permanently.
Once a popular lodge among sea captains and officers of the merchant fleet during the 18th century, today our lodge boasts a vibrant membership of over 60 individuals, representing a healthy mix of ages, nationalities, and backgrounds, with new Initiates welcomed on a regular basis.
Our camaraderie is not limited to the lodge room but is further cultivated through a variety of social events—another proud tradition dating back to our early years. These include exquisite wine tastings, elegant Ladies’ Nights in London’s West End, relaxed garden parties, and even the occasional trip overseas.
Throughout its long history, Strong Man Lodge has helped establish nearly 100 other lodges, primarily in Essex, creating a large fraternal network with strong ties that endure to this day. Notable examples include True Friendship Lodge No. 160, founded in 1766, and Skelmersdale Lodge No. 1599, constituted in 1876.
Charity, one of the core values of Freemasonry, is a cornerstone of Strong Man Lodge. We are strongly committed to supporting a variety of charitable efforts and causes. Generosity is a fundamental part of our identity, and we are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of those in need. Visit the charity page to learn more about our initiatives.
